Reflecting 101

  1. Concept
    • Theoretical construct or idea to be reflected on
      • Often Key or Enabling Competency from a CanMED role
      • Sometimes up to three descriptors of competence related to a CanMED role (eg. three attributes of successful leaders)
  2. Objective Story
    • The story from one’s professional or personal life related to the concept
      • Choose an experience of confusion, surprise, discomfort or personal growth
    • Majority of the story related to the concept and excludes content related to other CanMED roles
    • Third party observer would agree with the story
  3. Subjective Story
    • What are the driving / motivating factors / feelings / concerns for yourself, colleagues, the patient, allied health, supervisor?
    • Interpretation of the emotional and cognitive reactions to the story
    • What systemic issues contributed to this story happening?
    • Why is the concept important to the story and the above questions?
  4. Integration of concept to self
    • How have you grown from this reflection?
    • How has your understanding of the concept (ie. CanMED role) changed?
    • How will this impact your practice change? As a resident? As a staff?
  5. Critical Analysis
    • Implications of your new understanding of the concept to yourself, others, society?  What are the unintended consequences of your reflection?
    • What assumptions were made in your reflection? What is the impact of altering variables in the story?  When do your conclusions apply or not apply?
