As part of our seminar we were required to develop a tool to assess the knowledge our participants gained during our presentation. Assessment whether a seminar is achieving its goals is important. Even if a great deal of effort is put into a presentation, if the attendees are not able to retain any of the transmitted content then the effort is wasted. Our assessment tool was based directly on the learning objectives given to participants at the beginning of the seminar. This ensured the questions we asked were relevant and furthermore allowed not only for us to assess the participants but for the participants to self-assess as well. The pre and post assessments of our learners demonstrated strong growth in knowledge over the duration of our workshop. Learners gained appreciation for what interprofessional education is, obstacles to interprofessional learning and some of the theory associated with interprofessional learning. I worry using identical pre and post-tests encouraged our learners to only to focus on testable content. Furthermore many of the questions were very narrow in focused and guess what I am thinking type questions making their utility for workshop knowledge level rather limited. The tool was one of the final elements we developed for our seminar. In future workshops I am involved in, I would like to develop the assessment tool much earlier in the process so it can aid in the design of the program.
